PEORIA, IL – Reditus Laboratories in Pekin has provided further proof that the omicron variant is causing most of the COVID-19 infections in Illinois.

Of 90 specimens collected Jan. 11-12 and sequenced at the Pekin lab, 88 were of the omicron variant, and two were identified to be the delta variant. The results were dramatically different from sequencing the lab performed in early December, when all 188 specimens were identified as the delta variant, according to Reditus CEO Dr. Aaron Rossi.

“The omicron variant is currently the most predominant SARS-CoV-2 circulating within the U.S., as it’s been anticipated. The interesting story here is, rapidly, omicron became almost 100% of all positive cases so quickly. The data does show that also is the case in our testing area,” Rossi said.

The majority of the cases identified during the sequencing runs were from people from throughout Illinois.
