
Histotechnologist I – Anatomic Pathology

JOB DESCRIPTION
Precisely and accurately performs a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures, including high-complexity assays. Adheres to good laboratory practice, standard operating procedures, and principals of quality control. Meets productivity standards, priority demands, and deadlines. Demonstrates flexibility and versatility in coordinating tasks. Performs equipment maintenance and takes on special projects as requested. This position reports to the General Supervisor and is expected to accomplish tasks with minimal direct supervision.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
- Gross examinations of formalin fixed and fresh
- Tissue embedding with correct orientation and performed at a reasonable pace.
- Microtomy, artifact-free and performed at a reasonable pace.
- Routine and special staining.
- Proper chemical handling and storage.
- Collation and distribution of slides to pathologists
- Organize work to meet department needs and established turnaround times.
- Inventory and supply stocking, replenishes routine reagents and leaves staining lines in good condition for the next user.
- Adheres to safety, HIPAA, CAP and CLIA regulations.
- Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures related to each test performed.
- Acquires skills necessary to implement quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties indicated above.
REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in either chemical, biological, medical technology, clinical laboratory sciences, or physical sciences from a recognized college or university. HT/HTL(ASCP) certification. Previous experience in a histology lab to include experience with microtomes, tissue processors, and autostainers.
Acceptable Education: A minimum of 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university that must include 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology and 12 additional hours of chemistry, biology, CLS, or medical technology. HT/HTL(ASCP) eligible.
Skills and Abilities
- Requires basic medical terminology and understanding of anatomy.
- Requires ability to follow standard scientific laboratory methods and procedures.
- Requires ability to apply sterile techniques to avoid contamination of humans, the environment, and/or the specimen.
- Requires ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and prepare activity reports.
- Requires skill in operating laboratory equipment.
- Requires ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and laboratory formulasPage Image
- Requires fine motor skills and acute manual dexterity for intricate tasks
- Requires ability to visually discriminate colors within microscopic slides to determine product acceptability with or without reasonable accommodation.
